Stanley 140 Rabbet and block plane
offered 1895 - 1943
7 inches long with a 1 3/4" cutter
I believe this is the best and most versatile of
all Stanley block planes. It has a skewed cutter and a removable
side plate. With the plate removed the block plane turns into a
rebate plane. The skewed cutter works well on all types of woods and
grains. Early planes have Traut's Pat Nov 6, 1894 on the side plate.
The screws that hold the side plate are often replaced. The plane
pictured on the right has the correct screws. I personally don't
think it matters much, as long as the screws hold the side plate.
Problems: no side plate or custom made side
plate. Frog / adjuster block not correct. Often sampled from a 220
or similar. You need an adjuster block with the fine serration on
top to match the back of the cutter.
